This needs Chrome or Edge.

Installing over USB uses Web Serial, which only Chromium-based desktop browsers provide. There is no Safari or Firefox path, and no download that works around it.

Why does this need a cable?

The initial first firmware load must be done via USB, however once the firmware is installed future updates will be done via WiFi.
